A new Christian movie is playing in the theatres this week called “Prince Caspian.” “Prince Caspian” is one of an immensely popular series of books written by C.S. Lewis in the 1950s. The first book in the series is the “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” That book was made into a movie that was released in December of 2005. The popularity of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” at the box office and the Oscars prompted the creation of the movie sequel “Prince Caspian.” The movie is rated PG for epic battle action and violence. It is 140 minutes long and categorized under science fiction, fantasy, action, and adventure. Nearly 7000 yahoo users had rated the movie as of Tuesday evening and had given the movie a B+ rating. If you are a fan of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy with its action packed battles then you will probably enjoy watching “Prince Caspian” as well. There seems to be enough sword fighting, horses, mythical satyrs, dwarfs, and talking animals in it to thrill the imaginations of children and adults alike. A handsome young prince deprived of his rightful throne is sure to melt the hearts of many young women.

Should you take your adopted children to see this movie? We took our entire family to see “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.” The children loved it. Of course, I had previously read the series of books aloud to the children. I would read a chapter a day and sometimes I would catch them peaking ahead, they couldn’t stand the suspense. It is a wonderful opportunity for you to discuss the Biblical analogies included in the story.

For example, the only way into Narnia is through a single wardrobe. Not everyone can get into Narnia through the wardrobe; some who open the wardrobe only see coats and not a doorway. This is clearly revealing the narrow way into heaven as described in Luke 13:23-25.

Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?”
He said to them, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’
“But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. (NIV)

You also have an opportunity to discuss adoption. Prince Caspian is being raised as one of his uncle’s children. He doesn’t realize his heritage while growing up. How many adopted children have dreamed their birth family is royalty or rich? Those involved in closed adoptions sometimes have these fantasies. What an opportunity to bring up the benefits of knowing your birth family and the truth of your heritage. The movie offers many worthy topics for adoptive families.
